Eastern Orthodoxy

Below are my works regarding Eastern Orthodoxy, or in response to Eastern Orthodox writers and apologists.

Apologetics

The Anselm Myth - A common argument made by lay Eastern Orthodox apologists is that the idea of the atonement came more from Anselm in the tenth or eleventh century. In fact, the atonement, especially the substitutionary atonement, could be found in Church Fathers before then.

Podcast: Eastern Orthodoxy and the Atonement - Using a podcast from Frederica Mathewes-Green's show on Ancient Faith Radio, we examine the common Eastern Orthodox arguments against the atonement. We especially examine the teaching of the atonement from Hebrews, and how Mathewes-Green treats the relevant verses.

Prima Scriptura, Sola Scriptura and Sola Ecclesia - A response to the idea of "prima scriptura" over and against "sola scriptura," and how it logically leads into "sola ecclessia."

The Assumption of Mary Reviewed - We examine the historicity of the bodily assumption of Mary, which is believed in both Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. This blog post was linked to an Eastern Orthodox forum; I provided some responses to many of the arguments made in an update.

Common Objections to Sola Scriptura - This post was written with objections from both Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy in mind, but I think it bears sharing on this page.

Podcast: Re: Are You Saved? - It's common for Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics alike to say: "I was saved, I'm being saved, and I hope to be saved." We listen to one such presentation on that by Eastern Orthodox Molly Sabourin, and offer a response to it.

Podcast: Why I Left Eastern Orthodoxy - A podcast episode where I give a personal testimony of why I left Eastern Orthodoxy after becoming a chrismated, practicing member.

Podcast: Does John 6 Teach the Eucharist? - What does John 6 teach? Can it teach the Eucharist? We examine the passage in its full context to see.

Matthew Gallatin and Romans 9 Series

I reviewed the treatment of Romans 9 by Eastern Orthodox writer and speaker Matthew Gallatin, and whether or not he accurately handles the text.

Matthew Gallatin and Predestination Series

I review Matthew Gallatin's "sequel" of sorts to his Romans 9 series, where he tackles the topic of predestination.
